چکیده

The availability of L-ascorbic acid labeled with Cl4 had made possible studies on the metabolism of the vitamin in man (l), guinea pig (2,3), and rat (4, 5). In the present investigation the metabolic fate of carboxyllabeled n-ascorbic acid and carboxyl-labeled L-ascorbic acid was compared in guinea pigs and rats. This study is of interest, since little is known of the biological fate of D-ascorbic acid. In addition, it was thought that information might be obtained which would explain why the D isomer is reported to have no vitamin C activity in guinea pigs (6, 7). The tracer technique was required in this investigation, since it is not possible to distinguish by chemical methods small amounts of n-ascorbic acid from normally occurring n-ascorbic acid in biological material. The results to be presented show that the carboxyl carbon of D-ascorbic acid, like that of L-ascorbic acid, is extensively oxidized to COZ. Because of the rapid metabolism and excretion of n-ascorbic acid, it is retained in the body to a considerably lesser extent than L-ascorbic acid, which may be an important factor in explaining why D-ascorbic acid has virtually no vitamin C activity in guinea pigs.’

Metabolism of L-ascorbic acid-1-C14 in man.

n-Ascorbic acid labeled with Cl4 has been utilized in studying the metabolism of this vitamin in rats (1, 2) and guinea pigs (3, 4). In both species there is considerable conversion of carboxyl-labeled n-ascorbic acid to CO2 and significant urinary excretion of labeled oxalate. The important nutritional role of n-ascorbic acid made it desirable to study the metabolism of the labeled vitamin in ...

Effect of scurvy on cholesterol and ascorbic acid in guinea pig adrenals.

It has been shown earlier (1) that the metabolism of carbohydrate is disturbed in scorbutic guinea pigs as evidenced by diminished glucose tolerance, deposition of liver glycogen, and insulin content of the pancreas. Although the adrenalin content of the adrenals of scorbutic guinea pigs is increased, it has been shown by removing the adrenal medulla that adrenalin is not responsible for the lo...

Ascorbic acid synthesis in normal and drug-treated rats, studied with L-ascorbic-1-C14 acid.

It is known that, of all animal species studied, only man, other Primates, and the guinea pig are unable to synthesize ascorbic acid. Results obtained in rats, with radioactive glucose, indicate that ascorbic acid is synthesized by a fairly direct route from glucose (l-3), but no information has been available concerning the rate of synthesis and metabolism of ascorbic acid. Such information wo...

THE EFFECT OF ASCORBIC ACID ON BLOOD HISTAMINE LEVEL AND DELAYED-TYPE HYPERSENSITIVITY IN GUINEA PIGS

The effect of ascorbic acid on blood histamine level and delayed-type hypersensitivity was studied in thirty male guinea pigs. Animals were sensitized to B.C.G., trichophytin and mallein during the first four weeks. The diet was ad libitum during this period. After this "sensitization period" animals w er e tested intradermally with tuberculin, trichophytin and mallein. The number and diam...
